چکیده

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of craniofacial morphology on pharyngeal airway space (PAS) in individuals with normal sagittal skeletal pattern. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 adult female patients with skeletal Class I jaw relationship were included in the study. Lateral cephalograms were obtained and hand traced. Various soft and hard tissue points identified and linear and angular measurements carried out to evaluate the pharyngeal airway space. The data thus collected were subjected to statistical analysis. Result: The linear variables LAFH (lower anterior face height) and Na-Se-Ba (cranial base length) did not show statistically significant correlation with PAS. Among angular variables, although MPA (mandibular plane angle) showed a negative correlation however it was statistically insignificant. Other angular variables like NaSe-Ba angle (cranial base angle), SNA and SNB did not correlate with the posterior airway space. Conclusion: The study concluded that craniofacial morphology does not have any significant bearing on the pharyngeal airway space. At best its role in pharyngeal airway discrepancies can be defined as secondary and contributory.

Pharyngeal airway dimensions: a cephalometric, growth-study-based analysis of physiological variations in children aged 6-17.

OBJECTIVE The aim was to assess pharyngeal airway dimensions and physiological changes based on lateral cephalometric radiographs from healthy untreated children aged 6-17 years. MATERIALS/METHODS The sample consisted of 880 lateral cephalograms (412 females and 468 males) of the Zurich Craniofacial Growth Study. Statistical analyses on cephalometric measurements of airway dimensions (distanc...

Cephalometric changes in adult pharyngeal morphology.

This cephalometric study investigated morphological changes occurring in the pharynx between early and middle adult life. A sample of 16 young adults (mean age 20.2 years) had cephalometric films taken and repeated after an interval of 32 years. Changes in pharyngeal skeletal size, pharyngeal soft tissue thickness, pharyngeal airway depth, and soft palate dimensions were examined, in addition t...

Changes of the Posterior Airway Space Following Orthognathic Surgery in Class III

Objective: Adaptation of the pharyngeal airway space does occur after different surgical strategies of class III patients including mandibular setback, maxillary advancement and bimaxillary surgery. The aim of this study is to conduct a detailed cephalometric evaluation of the alterations taking place in the morphology of the pharyngeal airway space after treatment of class III skeletal deformi...

Effect of obesity and erect/supine posture on lateral cephalometry: relationship to sleep-disordered breathing.

Craniofacial and upper airway anatomy, obesity and posture may all play a role in compromising upper airway patency in patients with the sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between obesity, facial structure and severity of sleep-disordered breathing using lateral cephalometric measurements and to assess the effect of body posture on cephalo...
